STEPHEN R. REED

We Mourn The Loss of
One of the Great People of the City of Harrisburg
and of Bishop McDevitt's Class of 1967

Steve Reed
Bishop McDevitt Class of 1967

Stephen R. Reed
August 9, 1949 - January 25, 2020

The Class President of our Bishop McDevitt High School Class of 1967 passed away on January 25, 2020.  Steve was taken after a decade-long battle against cancer.

Steve was born in Chambersburg on August 9, 1949.  He graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School in 1967.

Steve's 35 years of public service included:
*  Serving as State Representative for Harrisburg for 6 years from 1974 to 1980, and mayor of Harrisburg
*  Serving as the most accomplished Mayor of the City of Harrisburg for 28 years from 1981 to 2009.

We remember what the City of Harrisburg was like before Steve Reed became Mayor.  The city was in great need of revitalization which was excellently brought to Harrisburg by Mayor Steve Reed.
We remember Mayor Reed's myriad of accomplishments that we see today and will see for a long time in the future. Just look around the city and see City Island, National Civil War Museum, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg University, Harrisburg Senators Baseball, Restaurant Row on 2nd Street, PA National Fire Museum, and much more.
When Steve was Student Council President at Bishop McDevitt High School (Class of 1967), we called him Governor because of his statesmanship. His ability to lead was clearly seen even in high school by his classmates. Though Steve did not become Governor of PA in the literal sense, he surely performed as a Governor in the Harrisburg Region, a leader not to be denied success.
Our Bishop McDevitt High School Class of '67 is proud to have grown up with this accomplished man, Steve Reed. We are grateful for the times we spent together at our 50th Class Reunion in 2017 and at other classmate gatherings since then.

We miss Steve now and always will.
We always remember Steve as a great Classmate of
Bishop McDevitt High School Class of '67.

Bishop McDevitt High School
Class of 1967 in 2019:
2 Years after the 50th Year Reunion
Classmates Continue To Gather

Thursday Dinner, August   7, 2019  at Gilligan's Restaurant
Saturday Lunch,  August 10, 2019  at The Wharf Grill

(See Pics Below)

Even for 2 years after The 50th Year Class Reunion of the Class of 1967, we continue to gather and share opportunities for classmates to connect and reconnect.  Time moves on and we are 52 years since being at Bishop McDevitt in 1967.  The once great building that we went to school in for 4 years may not be the same and showing its age, we are still strong and growing in many ways.

On Wednesday evening, August 7, 2019, we gathered  at Gilligan's Restaurant (Bar & Grill) in Colonial Park, a very pleasant place with very good food and a semi-private dining area for us.  It was well attended and a great time was had.
On Saturday afternoon, August 10, 2019, we gathered at The Wharf Restaurant (Bar and Grill) in Rutherford, another very pleasant place with very good food and a private dining area for us.  It was well attended and a great time was had.

Sue Camplese Herman and her husband Gary continue to be the fire starters and keep the flames burning for our class in organizing all of our gatherings.

We had a good turn out for both gatherings. For the 2 events, we had 26 classmates and 11 spouses.  Some attended 1 event, some attended both events.  Others could not attend for illness, trips, and other, but we had many greetings from 7 classmates.  If you cannot attend, it's great to hear from you so we can stay in touch.

An interesting thing is happening.  The spouses are becoming friends of the classmates.  That's a great spin-off from gathering as a class.

Here's the list of who attended and sent greetings

***** GOOD NEWS *****
Supporting one another is an important reason why we continue to meet as the McD Class of 67

Karen and Len
Len Yoder, husband of Karen Starsinic Yoder, is healthy again after being involved in a serious motor cycle accident about a year ago.  Len spent many intense days in the ICU and more days in the hospital.  He is fully recovered.  He has not ridden his undamaged Harley since, but he expects to sometime.  Karen expressed her thanks to classmates for their thoughts and prayers through that difficult "touch and go", life-threatening time. During Len's recovery she posted the following:  "I truly believe in miracles and prayers making them happen. Len will have a long recovery but he's doing so much better. Thank you!"

VICTORS!! Over the years we have had several classmates who have been victorious in their fight with cancer:

  • Joanne Kastelic (5 years since treatments),
  • Marcia Barbush Yarnell (1 year since treatments),
  • Terry Navarro Govelovich (only months since treatments).
  • Any others?
RENEWERS!!  There are some who have had various parts replaced an repaired and they keep on keepin' on.  I won't mention any names.
