Steve Reed
Bishop McDevitt Class of 1967

Stephen R. Reed
August 9, 1949 - January 25, 2020

The Class President of our Bishop McDevitt High School Class of 1967 passed away on January 25, 2020.  Steve was taken after a decade-long battle against cancer.

Steve was born in Chambersburg on August 9, 1949.  He graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School in 1967.

Steve's 35 years of public service included:
*  Serving as State Representative for Harrisburg for 6 years from 1974 to 1980, and mayor of Harrisburg
*  Serving as the most accomplished Mayor of the City of Harrisburg for 28 years from 1981 to 2009.

We remember what the City of Harrisburg was like before Steve Reed became Mayor.  The city was in great need of revitalization which was excellently brought to Harrisburg by Mayor Steve Reed.
We remember Mayor Reed's myriad of accomplishments that we see today and will see for a long time in the future. Just look around the city and see City Island, National Civil War Museum, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg University, Harrisburg Senators Baseball, Restaurant Row on 2nd Street, PA National Fire Museum, and much more.
When Steve was Student Council President at Bishop McDevitt High School (Class of 1967), we called him Governor because of his statesmanship. His ability to lead was clearly seen even in high school by his classmates. Though Steve did not become Governor of PA in the literal sense, he surely performed as a Governor in the Harrisburg Region, a leader not to be denied success.
Our Bishop McDevitt High School Class of '67 is proud to have grown up with this accomplished man, Steve Reed. We are grateful for the times we spent together at our 50th Class Reunion in 2017 and at other classmate gatherings since then.

We miss Steve now and always will.
We always remember Steve as a great Classmate of
Bishop McDevitt High School Class of '67.
